Heartworm Prevention

Awareness!

What is Heartworm disease?

Heartworm disease is a potentially fatacal disease casued by parasitic worms that reside in the arteries of the lungs and sometime sin the right side of the heart in cats, dogs and other species of mammals. Heartworm disease can infect dogs and cats of any age and breed. Heartworm is transmitted by infected mosquitos.

What are the signs of heartworm disease?

Recently infected dogs may show no signed of infection while dogs heavily infected may show signs of mild coughing, decrease in activity, tiring after minimal exercise, decrease in appetite and weight.

Cats can show very non-specific symptoms (meaning they can mimick other feline diseases). Chronic signs include gagging, vomitting, lethargy, weight loss, difficult breathing.

How is Heartworm detected?

Heartworm disease can be detected with a blood test for a substance of heartworm called an antigen.

Is there a heartworm preventative?

YES! For both dogs and cats there are is a montly chewable such as Heartgard Plus. Heartworm prevention is safe and easy. Treatment for heartworm is complicated and expensive and can take weeks for an infected animal to recover. There is currently no products approved for the treatment of heartworm infection in cats.
