Phoenix veterinarian, Dr. Russell Greene at Phoenix Veterinary Internal Medicine Services is the only veterinarian in Arizona who is a board certified specialist in both Small Animal Internal Medicine, and Bacteriology & Mycology (Infectious Diseases).  Phoenix Veterinary Internal Medicine Services, which is also known as PVIMS, is a mobile practice, which allows referring veterinarians to provide specialty services to their clients and small animal patients, within the convenience of their own clinic.

Dr. Russell Greene and the staff at Phoenix Veterinary Internal Medicine Services have provided the Greater Phoenix Metropolitan Area compassionate specialty veterinary care since 1992---longer than any other small animal internal medicine specialist in the area.  We also provide specialty services to the Prescott Area, one Saturday a month. Our services include consultations on complex internal medicine cases and infectious disease cases; ultrasound; endoscopy; and a variety of specialized diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Consultations

Dr. Greene is well qualified to consult on complicated internal medicine cases and difficult infectious disease cases in dogs and cats. He is a board certified specialist in Small Animal Internal Medicine, and he is also a board certified specialist in Bacteriology and Mycology (Infectious Diseases). In addition to his veterinary degree, he has a PhD in Veterinary Microbiology. He is an internationally recognized authority on Coccidioidomycosis (Valley Fever) in the dog and cat. Dr. Greene has been serving the Greater Phoenix Metropolitan Area since 1992---longer than any other small animal internal medicine specialist in the area.  In that time, he has seen over 20,000 referral cases. Experience does count. 

Ultrasound

Our state-of -the-art ultrasound machine features pulsed-wave, continuous-wave, and color-flow Doppler. Ultrasonographic examination of the abdomen, thoracic cavity, heart, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, and other structures are routinely performed. Color-flow Doppler is available to detect shunts and abnormal blood flow. Ultrasound-guided needle aspiration and tru-cut biopsies are routinely used to collect fluid and tissue samples for various laboratory tests (cytology, culture, histopathology, fluid analysis). In addition, we use ultrasound to guide various therapies. For instance, abnormal fluid accumulations within the abdominal, pleural, and pericardial cavities can be safely drained using ultrasound guidance. We also use ultrasound guidance to create pericardial windows, to flush the gallbladder, and to perform alcohol ablation of parathyroid nodules and certain cysts within organs.

Endoscopy

We have a wide variety of endoscopes, to facilitate evaluation of veterinary patients of all sizes. Video endoscopy is used to perform all examinations. The following endoscopic procedures are routinely performed: rhinoscopy, bronchoscopy, esophagoscopy, gastroduodenoscopy, colonoscopy, vaginoscopy, cystoscopy, and urethroscopy. Associated procedures that are routinely performed include endoscopic biopsies, foreign body retrieval (everything from treble hooks to corn cobs), PEG tube placement (stomach feeding tube), tracheal stent placement, bronchoalveolar lavage, endoscopic electrosurgery, and treatment of strictures with balloon dilation / bougienage.

Endoscopic Ultrasound

Dr. Greene is one of only a few veterinarians in the country using endoscopic ultrasound to obtain ultrasound-guided aspiration of hilar lymph nodes.

Doppler Blood Pressure Measurement

Systemic hypertension is a silent killer. Doppler blood pressure measurements are routinely obtained on all patients who are presented for an echocardiogram, and in selected cases where systemic hypertension is a concern.

Electrocardiography

We perform 10-lead electrocardiograms on selected patients, where arrhythmias are a concern. Also, whenever an echocardiogram is performed, a simultaneously run electrocardiogram (lead-II) is evaluated, to screen for arrhythmias. We can provide ambulatory monitoring services (event recorders and Holter monitors) for cases with suspected intermittent arrhythmias.

Radiographic Interpretation

Dr. Greene is available for radiographic interpretations. Radiographs can be mailed or submitted by email. A Procedure Request Form (by mail or fax) should accompany the request, with the patient signalment and pertinent history filled in. Within 24 hours of receiving the radiographs, Dr. Greene will call the referring veterinarian and will provide a detailed, typed report of his radiographic interpretation.

Miscellaneous Diagnostic and Therapeutic Procedures

Dr. Greene is qualified to perform a number of special diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Examples include stent placement, bone biopsies, bone marrow aspirates & biopsies, joint taps, and nasal flushing for certain fungal infections.

Clinical Studies

Phoenix Veterinary Internal Medicine Services is often involved in clinical studies. Currently, we are involved in a Coccidioides Antigen Study in Dogs & Cats. The study aims to determine whether a novel test for Valley Fever has clinical utility. This study evaluates antigen detection in animals with proven Coccidioidomycosis (Valley Fever), based on the demonstration of spherules or the isolation of the fungus from tissue or body fluids. To be eligible for the study, the animal must have the Coccidioides organism identified by histopathology, cytology, and/or culture. The study requires only a single serum sample (2-5 ml) and a single urine sample (10-25 ml). The patient cannot have been on antifungal therapy for more than 5 days at the time of sample collection (blood and urine).
